The 5 Most Common Artificial Turf Installation Mistakes

1.Incorrect Base Preparation and Compaction

THE PROBLEM: The most common - and most expensive - failure point. Installers skip proper aggregate depth or compaction, leading to soft spots, uneven surfaces, and drainage pooling within the first year.

2.Poor Drainage Planning

THE PROBLEM: Artificial turf drains through the backing - but only if what’s underneath lets it. Improperly graded bases, clay soils, or compacted native soil beneath the aggregate trap water, causing odor, bacterial growth, and turf lifting.

3.Seam Placement and Technique Errors

THE PROBLEM: Seams placed perpendicular to the primary viewing angle, or joined without proper adhesive overlap, show within months. This is the #1 callback trigger on ALL installs.

4.Wrong Infill Type or Volume

THE PROBLEM: Infill affects performance, heat retention, blade recovery and odor control - but many installers use whatever is cheapest or most available. Sand infill in pet areas, or insufficient infill volume, leads to matting, wrinkles and client complaints.

5.Improper Edging and Perimeter Securing

THE PROBLEM: Turf that isn't properly secured at the perimeter either lifts or shifts and creates a trip hazards — especially on commercial or sports installations with heavy foot traffic.
